Support an area volunteer team.
Area Coordinators support and coordinate a team of volunteer Local Prison Representatives. They help recruit and induct new volunteers and are the first point of contact for advice and support for them. They build and promote a solution-focused ethos within their team and they regularly contribute to new developments within the charity. It's a substantial role which suits someone experienced in managing people, confident delivering presentations and with good communication and interpersonal skills.
It can take several months to complete Shannon Trust Training and prison security clearance so we're looking for volunteers who are able to stay with us for a while, ideally a couple of years.
You don't need any formal qualifications to join the team. We're looking for people who:
Area Coordinators typically give at least 30 hours a month to the role. Many of the tasks can be carried out from your home but you will need to visit prisons within your area, attend area meetings and attend meetings held centrally.
You'll attend 2 one-day workshops. The first, Induction, will introduce you to Shannon Trust, how our Reading Plan works and to volunteering in prisons. The second, How to Train Mentors, will get you ready to train Mentors. You'll have a specific Area Coordinator session with your Regional Manager who will also provide you with ongoing support. You'll have administrative support from a volunteer Area Secretary.
You'll be helping unlock the power of reading for people in prison, have the chance to gain new skills and experiences or use your existing ones, and you'll be part of a great volunteer team.
You'll be able to claim back all reasonable expenses and you'll be covered by our Public Liability insurance. If you use your own vehicle for Shannon Trust activity, you'll need to check that you have the correct insurance cover.
